To make laws. Legislator: one authorized to make laws, or, sometimes, a member of the law-making body. Legislature: the body of persons in.the state clothed with authority to enact laws. Legislative power. That one of the three great departments into which the powers of government are distributed, — legislative, executive, and judicial, — which is concerned with enacting or establishing, and incidentally with repealing, laws. Legit vel nou? Does he read or not? The form of the question asked of the ordinary, when, in old English practice, a prisoner claiming benefit of clergy had the book presented to him to read. If the ordinary found the prisoner entitled to the privilege, the formal answer was, legit ut clericus, — he reads as a clerk, — and thereupon the clerk's privilege was extended to him.
