A measure equal to the twentieth part of a degree of latitude. Boucher, Inst. n. 1845. It is generally conceded that a nation has exclusive territorial Jurisdiction upon the high seas for a marine league from its own shores. It is claimed that the breadth of this maritime belt, which in the 18th century was fixed at a marine league as being the range of existing artillery, should now be extended owing to the greater range of artillery of the present day. 1 Kent 29.
