For a case considering such grants, see U. S. v. Chavez, 175 U. S. 509, 20 Sup. CL 159, 44 L. Ed. 256, where it was held that upon a long and uninterrupted possession of lands in Mexico, beginning long prior to the transfer of the territory in which they are situated to the United States, and continuing after that transfer, the law presumes in favor of the possessor. Possession for six or seven years before the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848 of land by an alleged grantee is not suifleient to constitute a title which can be confirmed under the court of private laud claims acL where a valid grant is not proved to have been made; Hays v.
