The term “midshipman” means a midshipman of the United States Naval Academy and any other midshipman on active duty in the naval service.

In ships of war, a kind of naval cadet, whose business is to second or transmit the orders of the superior officers and assist in the necessary business of the vessel, but understood to be in training for a commission. A youth employed on board ship of war; -whose duties are chiefly to transmit and second the orders of the officers; and to render any general service within his powers that may be required; but understood to be in training to receive a commission. A passed midshipman is one wlio has sustained an examination, and is qualified for appointment to a lieutenancy.
