The name of one of the United States of America. The territory of Mississippi, embracing the present states of Alabama and Mississippi, was authorized to be organized by act of congress, of April 9, 1798, and organized on 22d January, 1799. Georgia, from which the territory was formed, ceded it to the United States on April 24, 1802. The western part of the Mississippi territory was authorized to form a state government to be known as the state of Mississippi, by act of congress passed March 1, 1817, and the state was admitted into the Union December, 1817.
