A loss of a part of a thing, or of its value, as contrasted with a total loss. In Maritime Law. Where this happens by damage to an article, it is also called a particular average (q. v.) PARTICEPS (Lat. plur. participes; from pars, a part, and capere, to take). Literally, a part-taker; a partaker or sharer; one jointly interested with another; an associate or accomplice.

In old English law. A part-owner; a parcener.
