In French Law. The part of a person’s estate which he may bequeath to others than his natural heirs. A parent having one legitimate child may dispose of one-lialf only of his property; leaving two, one-third only; and leaving three or more, one-fourth only; and it matters not whether the disposition is inter vivos, or by will.
