In English law. A prison appropriated to the debtors and criminals confined under process, or by authority of the superior courts at Westminster, the Marshalsea court and Palace court, and the high court of admiralty, and also to persons imprisoned under the bankrupt law. It was established by St. 5 & 6 Vict. c. 22, consolidating into one the queen's bench, the Fleet, and the Marshalsea prisons. 3 Steph. Comm. 254.
