In Civil Law. A kind of banishment known to the civil law, which did not take away the rights of citizenship, which dcportatio did. Some say that relegatio was temporary, deportatio perpetual; that relegatio did not take away the property of the exile, and that dcportatio did; but these distinctions do not seem always to exist. There was one sort of relegatio for slaves, viz. in agros; another for freemen, viz. in provincias. Relegatio only exiled from certain limits; dcportatio confined to a particular place ( locus poence). Calvinus, Lex.
