Sidewalk

" A raised way for foot passengers at the side of a street or road; a foot pavement." ' May rest on posts, as well as on the ground. ^ The word *' street " presumptively always includes the sidewalks: as, in a statute providing for compensation for damages from a change of grade in a street, * although " street " often denotes that part of the way devoted to carriage travel. ^ A walk crossing a public alley is a " crosswalk," as distinguished from sidewalk.' In a suit to recover damages for injuries received from a fall caused by a detective sidewalk the plaintiff may show that other like accidents occurred at the same place from the same cause.* The duty of a municipal corporation is to see that its sidewalks are reasonably safe for persons using ordinary caution. Mere slipperiness, from ice or snow, not accumulated so as to constitute a dangerous obstruction, is not ordinarily such a defect as will make the city liable for damages occasioned thereby."
