The term "thieves" is broad enough in law to cover both compound and simple larceny, and, in common parlance to include the latter; and when used in a policy of insurance upon the cargo of a vessel, it is not restricted in its application to external or assailing thieves, as pirates, rovers, etc., but covers a simple larceny committed by a stranger to the ship. 1 Hill (N.
