deficit

Defined in 2 places of the United States Code.

The term “deficit” means, with respect to a fiscal year, the amount by which outlays exceeds 2 receipts during that year.

The terms “budget authority”, “new budget authority”, “outlays”, and “deficit” have the meanings given to such terms in section 3 of the Congressional Budget and Impoundment Control Act of 1974 [2 U.S.C. 622] and “discretionary spending limit” shall mean the amounts specified in section 901 of this title.

The terms “budget authority”, “new budget authority”, “outlays”, and “deficit” have the meanings given to such terms in section 3 of the Congressional Budget and Impoundment Control Act of 1974 [2 U.S.C. 622] (but including the treatment specified in section 907(b)(3) of this title of the Hospital Insurance Trust Fund) and the terms “maximum deficit amount” and “discretionary spending limit” shall mean the amounts specified in section 601 of that Act [2 U.S.C. 665] as adjusted under sections 901 and 903 of this title.
