One of the states of the United States of America. By the act of congress of February 22, 1889, the people of Washington were enabled to form a constitution and state government, and be admitted into the Union on an equal footing With the original states. Accordingly/ after all the requirements had beeD complied with on November 11, 1889, the president by proclamation announced the admission of Washington into the Union. An amendment in 1910 provided for woman suffrage; and In 1912 for initiative, referendum and recall.
