An English name for a sort of overseer of highways. Waywardens are elected under the highway acts of 1862 and 1864 (Stats. 25 & 26 Vict. ch. 61, and 27 & 28 Vict. ch. 101), in any county of which the justices, in sessions assembled, have formed it, or any part of it, into a highway district, governed by a highway board, according to the plan prescribed by tiiose acts. They are elected annually in each parish within the highway district, and, together with the justices acting for the county, and residing within the district, form the highway board for the district.
