Cannabis law covers the legal issues surrounding the cultivation, processing, sale, and use of cannabis and related products. It is a fast-evolving and unusually complex area because cannabis is treated very differently depending on the level of government and the jurisdiction involved.

A defining feature of this field is the tension between different layers of law. In the United States, federal law and the laws of individual states have not always aligned on cannabis, and the rules can differ further from one state or locality to another. As a result, a cannabis-related activity may be treated one way under one set of laws and differently under another. This patchwork affects nearly everything a cannabis business does.

Practical issues in cannabis law include licensing and permits, strict regulatory compliance, zoning and real estate, product testing and labeling, advertising restrictions, banking and access to financial services, taxation, and employment questions. Businesses must also navigate uncertainty, since the legal landscape continues to change.

For a non-lawyer, the key point is that operating in or around the cannabis industry means dealing with overlapping and sometimes conflicting rules, and that what is permitted in one place may not be in another. Businesses and individuals involved with cannabis commonly consult lawyers to understand the rules that apply to their specific activity and location.
