Ala. Code § 45-37-250

Additional Salary of a Mayor Serving as Superintendent of Municipal Utility System.

(Acts 1975, No. 258, p. 792, §1; Act 2022-411, §1.)

(a) The mayor of any municipality in Jefferson County who is employed full-time by a municipality, municipal board, or municipal public corporation to serve as superintendent of a municipal light and power system, municipal water system, municipal sewage system, or municipal gas system, or one or more of them, owned and operated by the municipality, municipal board, or municipal public corporation pursuant to Section 11-43-80, shall be paid for his or her service as superintendent of the system or systems, in addition to the salary he or she now or hereafter receives as mayor, the sum as the governing body, board, or municipal public corporation shall deem reasonable, but not to exceed twelve hundred dollars ($1,200) per month, notwithstanding the provisions of Section 11-43-80, or any other law to the contrary.

(b) Alternatively, notwithstanding subsection (a), the governing body or board of a municipality, municipal board, or municipal public corporation employing the mayor of any municipality in Jefferson County to serve as superintendent of a municipal light and power system, municipal water system, municipal sewage system, or municipal gas system, or one or more of them, owned and operated by the municipality, municipal board, or municipal public corporation, pursuant to Section 11-43-80, may adopt an ordinance or resolution electing for the municipality, municipal board, or municipal public corporation to be exempted from the limitations of subsection (a) and, instead, to follow Section 11-43-80, or other applicable law.

(c) This section shall not apply to the mayor of the City of Bessemer.
