Upon the death of any person confined to a mental institution under the control of the department, the superintendent of such institution shall, if he is of the opinion that the death may have resulted from violence or unnatural causes, immediately notify the district attorney for the district in which the death occurred, giving him the name and address of the person who died and the cause of death.
