The commissioner shall appoint a treasurer of each correctional institution of the commonwealth, who shall give bond with surety for the faithful performance of his duties. In each such institution the said treasurer shall receive and disburse all moneys paid by the commonwealth for the support of the institutions, and shall cause to be kept such books of account of the property, expenses, income and business thereof as may be approved by the comptroller.
