Mass. Gen. Laws ch. 149, § 176

Non-resident as special police officer

If, in an emergency, special police officers are appointed, under the name of police officers or any other name, to act as police officers for quelling a riot or disturbance or for protecting property, no non-resident of the commonwealth shall be so appointed unless he is a regular employee of the person whose property he is so appointed to protect.
