Mass. Gen. Laws ch. 161, § 41

Real and personal estate; stock or bonds of other street railways

A company may purchase and hold real and personal estate necessary or convenient for the operation of its railway; but it shall not, except as provided in section sixty-four, directly or indirectly, subscribe for, take or hold stock or bonds of any such company organized under general laws unless specially so authorized by the general court.
