Mass. Gen. Laws ch. 221, § 1

Clerk of court for commonwealth; appointment; term, etc

The justices of the supreme judicial court shall appoint the clerk of the supreme judicial court for the commonwealth for a term of five years from the date of his appointment, and may appoint an assistant clerk of said court for a term of three years from the first day of January next after his appointment, and may remove him.
