The compensation of deputy sheriffs not on salary and of constables for attendance upon the supreme judicial, appeals, superior or probate court shall be paid by the commonwealth. The compensation of deputy sheriffs not on salary and of constables for attendance upon the sessions of the county commissioners, shall be paid by the respective counties.
