Mass. Gen. Laws ch. 36, § 2

Election; qualification; tenure

In each such district and in each county not divided into districts, a register of deeds, who shall be a resident of such district or county, shall be elected, as provided in section one hundred and fifty-seven of chapter fifty-four, for the term of six years, beginning with the first Wednesday of January following his election, and until his successor is qualified.
