Mass. Gen. Laws ch. 51, § 24

Powers and duties

The registrars may cause the duties devolving upon a single registrar to be performed by one or two assistant registrars, and, if two are designated for such duties, they shall be of different political parties. The registrars shall make suitable regulations governing the assistant registrars, whose doings shall be subject to their revision and acceptance.
