Mass. Gen. Laws ch. 94, § 172

The barrel shall contain thirty-one and one half gallons and the hogshead two barrels, except that barrels containing malt beverages shall contain thirty-one gallons and that with respect to such barrels and fractional parts thereof a variation or tolerance of three per cent over and under the standard capacity shall be permitted.
