Mass. Gen. Laws ch. 98, § 56C

Placement of cash register; observation of total by customer; penalty

Whoever maintains a cash register or other mechanical device at a counter for totalling the monetary value of customer purchases at retail which is so hidden or in such a position that the total cannot be observed by the customer shall be punished by a fine of fifty dollars or shall be subject to a civil citation as provided in section 29A.
