Mont. Code Ann. § 16-4-502

The census taken under the direction of congress shall be the basis upon which the respective populations of the counties and incorporated cities or towns shall be determined. However, in the interim between censuses, the department shall use as such basis the most recent population estimates published by the bureau of the census, United States department of commerce.
