Mont. Code Ann. § 3-5-503

The clerk of the district court shall cause to be made in each index correct entries, under the appropriate headings, of each action begun in the court of which the person is clerk. The entries must be made alphabetically by the name of the plaintiff in the General Index--Plaintiffs and alphabetically by the name of the defendants in the General Index--Defendants.
