If county psychiatric hospitals are consolidated as provided by R.S.30:9-6, the county may sell its lands and buildings used for a psychiatric hospital that are unnecessary for hospital purposes, and the sale and conveyance of the lands shall vest in the purchaser title in fee to the premises so sold. The proceeds of the sale shall be applied to the sinking funds of the county or to the redemption of county bonds, and not otherwise.
