The board of chosen freeholders of any county, by resolution, may designate not more than 6 places to be used as county public morgues and provide for their maintenance and operation. The said board may appoint the morgue keepers for terms of 5 years from the date of their appointments. The morgue keepers shall be under the supervision and direction of the county or intercounty medical examiner.
