N.Y. Correct. Law § 150

§ 150. Definitions. As used in this article:\n 1. "City" means the City of New York.\n 2. "Commissioner" means the commissioner of correction of the city\nprovided, however, that if there shall be established by law a\ncorrectional administration in the city, "commissioner" shall mean the\ncorrectional administrator of the City.\n 3. "Department" means the department of correction of the city\nprovided, however, that if there shall be established by law a\ncorrectional administration in the city, "department" shall mean such\nadministration.\n 4. "Work release program" means a program in which the limits of place\nof confinement are extended for the purpose of seeking or engaging in\nemployment or self-employment, attending an educational institution,\nparticipating in a training program, or obtaining medical treatment not\notherwise available, caring for the prisoner's household and family or\nfor some other compelling reason consistent with the public interest.\n
