N.Y. Ins. Law § 6401

§ 6401. Definitions. In this article, the following definitions apply\nexcept as otherwise specified:\n (a) "Title insurance corporation" means a corporation exercising any\nof the powers described in paragraph one or two of subsection (b) of\nsection six thousand four hundred three of this article.\n (b) "Title insurance policy" means any policy or contract insuring or\nguaranteeing the owners of real property and chattels real and other\npersons interested therein, or having liens thereon, against loss by\nreason of encumbrances thereon and defective titles.\n
