1983 c.338 §111

“Vehicle identification number” means a distinguishing number assigned and affixed to a vehicle or vehicle component, such as an engine or transmission or other severable portion of a vehicle, by the manufacturer or under ORS 819.400 for the purpose of providing identification for the vehicle or vehicle component.
