Voter Choice Act
Rhode Island · Elections · §§ 17-29-1 to 17-29-3 · 3 sections
Overview
The Voter Choice Act authorizes ranked voting methods and prescribes how elections using them are conducted, including where a ranked contest appears on a ballot shared with other jurisdictions in a coordinated election. It also sets the surrounding administrative rules such elections run on — voting hours and time off work to vote, eligibility affidavits, watchers at primary, general, and nonpartisan elections, in-person voting procedure and assistance for electors who need it, ballot issuance and spoiled ballots, write-in votes, sample ballots, and voter service and polling centers — and assigns implementing responsibility to the state's chief election official. Tabulation is addressed for both paper and machine systems, covering opening of ballot boxes, counting by election judges, treatment of improperly marked ballots, inspection and sealing of voting machines, electronic vote-counting, and the close of the polls.
