In mining law, an entrance or approach. A horizontal excavation used as an entrance to a mine, or a vent by which ores and water are carried away. A horizontal entry to a mine. A statute which provides that "an adit at least ten feet in, along the lode, from the point of discovery, shall be equivalent to a discovery shaft," contemplates that the ten feet may be wholly or in part open or under cover, dependent upon the nature of the ground.^
