Bouvier's Law Dictionary and Concise Encyclopedia
In mining law, an entrance or approach. A horizontal excavation used as an entrance to a mine, or a vent by which ores and water are carried away. An excavation "in and along a lode," which in statutes of Colorado and other mining states is made the equivalent of a discovery shaft.
