Black's Law Dictionary

In fendal law. Conquest; acquisition by purchase; any method of acquiring the ownership of an estate other than by descent Also an estate acquired otherwise than by inheritance. In international law. The acquisition of the sovereignty of a country by forco of arms, exercised by an independent power which reduces the vanquished to the submission of its empire.
