Black's Law Dictionary
Lat. In the civil law. a sum paid by a new emphyteuta (q. vt) who acquires the emphyteusis, not as heir, but as a singular successor, whether by gift, devise, exchange or sale. It was a sum equal to the fiftieth part of the purchase money, paid to the domtnus or proprietor for his acceptance of the new emphyteuta.
