A place of running water where the tide or float comes up. A famous prison In London, so called from a river or ditch which was formerly there, on the side of which it stood. It was used especially for debtors and banknipts, and persons charged with contempt of the courts of chancery, exchequer, and common pleas. Abolished in 1842 and pulled down in 1845.
