A dtle of distinction oif respect. In England It Is given to the younger sons of earls, to the children of viscounts and barons, to persons occupying oificial places of trust and honor, and to the house of commons as a body, and to members •of the Executive Councils in India and the colonies. In the Upited States It is usually given to persons who hold or have held positions of importance under the national or state government.
