Bouvier's Law Dictionary and Concise Encyclopedia

LATH (L. Lat. laestrum or leda. Law Fr. and Eng. Diet.). A division of certain counties in England, intermediate between a county or shire and a hundred, sometimes containing three or four hundreds, as in Kent and Sussex.

But in Sussex the word used for this division Is rape. 1 Bla. Com. 116, There was formerly a la the- reeve or bailiff in each lathe. Id. This division into lathes continues to the present day. In Ireland, the lathe was intermediate between the tything and the hundred. Spencer, Ireland. See T, L.
