In Scotch law
Laws made by neighbors elected by common consent in the birlaw courts. Skene de Verb. Signif. Laws made by husbandmen, &c., concerning neighborhood, {rusticorum leges.) Id. in Reg. Maj. lib.

Spelman ^voc. Bellagines) considers this word essentially the same with by laws, (q. v.) Burlaw or (Birlaw) Courts. Courts composed of neighbors elected and chosen by common consent, which take cognizance of complaints between neighbor and neighbor; the judges (who are arbitrators) bemg called birlawmen, Skene de Verb. Signif. Spelman, voc.
