A New Law Dictionary and Glossary
[Lat. decretum.] In practice. The judgment of a court of equity or admiralty, answering to the judgment of a court of common law. A decree in equity is a sentence or order of the court, pronounced on hearing and understanding all the points in issue, and determining the right of all the parties to the suit, according to equity and good conscience.

In the canon law. The first of the two great divisions of the Corpus Juris Canonici; more commonly known as Gratian's decree, (decretum Gratiani, q. v.) In the civil law.
