Compulsory

In ecclesiastical procedure. A compulsory is a kind of writ to compel the attendance of a witnes, to undergo examination. Phillim. Ecc. Law, 1258. In order to render a payment compulsory, such a pressure must be exerted on the payor as to interfere with the free enjoyment of his 'rights of person or property, in the sense of depriving him of the exercise of his free will, and the compulsion must furnish the motive for the payment. 234 111. 543.

adj. Involuntary; forced; coerced by legal process or by force of statute.

— Compulsory arbitration. That which takes place where the consent of one of the parties is enforced by statutory provisions. Wood v. Seattle, 23 Wash. 1, 62 Pac. 135, 52 La. R. A. 369.

— Compulsory nonsuit. An involuntary nonsuit. See Nonsuit.

— Compulsory payment. One not made voluntarily, but exacted by duress, threats, the enforcement of legal process, or unconscionably taking advantage of another. Shaw v. — Compulsory process. Process to compel the attendance in court of-a person wanted there as a witness or otherwise; including not only the ordinary subpoena, but also a warrant of arrest or attachment if needed. Powers v.
