In ecclesiastical procedure. A compulsory is a kind of writ to compel the attendance of a witnes, to undergo examination.

In order to render a payment compulsory, such a pressure must be exerted on the payor as to interfere with the free enjoyment of his 'rights of person or property, in the sense of depriving him of the exercise of his free will, and the compulsion must furnish the motive for the payment.
