Affinity

The connection existing, in consequence of marriage, between each of the married persons and the kindred of the other. The relation contracted on marriage between a husband and his wife's kindred, and between the wife and her husband's kindred, as distinguished from consanguinity or relationship by blood.

The relations of the wife, her brothers, her sisters, her uncles, are allied to the husband by affinity; and his brothers, sisters, etc., are allied in the same way to the wife.

But the brother and the sister of the wife are not allied by the ties of affinity.

AFFIRM (Lat. afflrmwre, to make firm; to establish). Especially used of confirmations of the judgrments of an inferior by an appellate tribunal. To ratify or confirm a voidable act of the party. To make a solemn religious asseveration in the nature of an oath.
