The lessee of a farm. It is said that every lessee for life or years, although it be but of a small house and land, is called "farmer." This word implies no mystery, except it be that of husbandman.

In common parlance, and as a term of description in a deed, "farmer" means- one who cultivates a farm, whether he owns it or not. There may also be a farmer of the revenue, or of other personal property, as well as lands.
