A head

Hence poll tax is the name of a tax imposed upon the people at so much a head. To poll a jury is to require that each juror shall himself declare what is his verdict. This may be done, at the instance of either party, at any time before the verdict is recorded, according to the practice in some states.

In some states it lies in the discretion of the judge.

In Conveyancing. A deed poll, or single deed, is one made by a single party, whose edges are polled, or shaved even, in distinction from an "indenture," whose sides are indented, and which is executed by more than one party.
