Abridge

To shorten; to diminish; to condense; to epitomize; to make shorter, not in words merely, but by subtracting or omitting a portion of the substance; to deprive or cut off; to limit or curtail, as, to abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens.

Abridgment

An epitome or compendium containing the principal ideas of the larger work. Applied to books in which adjudged points of law are gathered from the decisions and systematically arranged to facilitate reference. An abridgment of a copyrighted publication (such as the law will permit) is a real and substantial condensation of the materials, not merely a selection and rearrangement to bring the work into smaller compass.
