A civil right is an enforceable right or privilege, which if interfered with by another gives rise to an action for injury. Examples of civil rights are freedom of speech, press, and assembly; the right to vote; freedom from involuntary servitude; and the right to equality in public places. Discrimination occurs when the civil rights of an individual are denied or interfered with because of their membership in a particular group or class. Statutes have been enacted to prevent discrimination based on race, sex, religion, age, previous condition of servitude, physical limitation, national origin, and in some instances sexual preference. Civil rights attorneys handle cases involving the rights of individuals to be free from unequal treatment (or discrimination) based on legally-protected characteristics such as race, gender, disability, national origin, age, sexual orientation, and religion. Mohawk is an unincorporated community in southern Greene County, Tennessee, United States, located 15 miles (24 km) northwest of the city of Greeneville. It is home to a post office, with zip code 37810. Mohawk is home to McDonald Elementary School, a Greene County public school that includes kindergarten through grade 8. The school was originally McDonald High School, built in 1919 on 6 acres (24,000 m) of land donated by Alex Ailshe. Its namesake was Earnest McDonald, a wealthy bachelor who donated money to build the school. The original building was demolished in 1957, and replaced by the brick building in use today. McDonald High School was dissolved after the 1966-67 school year, when the school was converted to an elementary school.
